Texas Felonies
Felonies are serious crimes and consequently carry serious punishment.
Under Texas law, the following degrees of felony offenses exist:
Felony Punishment Ranges
Capital Felonies are the most serious of all crimes that you can be charged with in Texas. If one is convicted of a capital offense in Texas, the punishment is either life in prison or death by execution.
First Degree Felonies carry a confinement of either life in prison or 5 – 99 years in prison and may include a fine up to $10,000.00.
Second Degree Felonies carry a confinement of 2 – 20 years in prison and may include a fine up to $10,000.00.
Third Degree Felonies carry a confinement of 2 – 10 years in prison and may include a fine up to $10,000.00.
State Jail Felonies generally carry a confinement of 180 days – 2 years in state jail and may include a fine up to $10,000.00. State Jail Felonies committed while using or exhibiting a deadly weapon carry a confinement of 2 – 10 years in state jail and may include a fine up to $10,000.00.
Like most laws, there are exceptions to the general rules above. Most notably, many felonies may include enhanced punishment ranges for repeat offenders.
